2022 - A bit of a poetry explosion

rhiannonoliverjame

I started taking poetry seriously in 2022. Well, not too seriously as I mostly focused on writing for children so there were lots of poems about making dens, eating things you shouldn't, and living life upside down - but you know what I mean!

Northern Gravy gave me a big boost in March 2022 when they published four of my poems (and paid me for them - thanks Northern Gravy - it really goes a long way to helping writers feel legitimate). You can read them here: https://northerngravy.com/poems-by-rhiannon-oliver/

The Dirigible Balloon also published more of my poetry, including my first published poem in Welsh. The Dirigible Balloon is an amazing free resource full of hundreds of poems for children - its well worth checking out. They gave me my first children's poetry publication back in August 2021 and I have 10 poems flying with them now. Take a browse! https://dirigibleballoon.org/

The Dirigible Balloon also gave me my first Children's poetry anthology entry in autumn 2022. Chasing Clouds raises money for The National Literacy Trust and I am proud to be in there alongside many other children's poets, both emerging and established.

I also had poetry accepted by Paperbound, Buzgaga and Parakeet in 2022. Of course, I'm new to all this, but it feels like a really lively time for children's poetry - there is almost always a submission call out to think about and I love the focus that gives my writing. I'm grateful to all these brilliant websites and magazines that give us somewhere to focus our creative energy! If you're interested in reading good children's poetry (or writing some yourself) then have a look at the websites I've mentioned :)
